Dahab
 
Dahab (Arabic دهب  Gold) is a small former fishing village in the south of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. The word means in Egyptian-Arab "gold" and corresponds to  Dhahab / ذهب / Dahab. Possible that there actually once gold was discovered, but it is likely that it is in the fine sand glittering gold flakes that probably mica particles.

 

Geographical Location

Dahab is located about 1 hour north of Sharm El-Sheikh on the Gulf of Aqaba. From Dahab go from about 2 hours to Mount Sinai and St. Catherine monastery, one of the oldest Christian monastery in the world.

Description

On the southern beach promenade is an excavation site. In 1989 under the Al Mashraba uncovered foundations hilly belong to a lighthouse and are between 1 Century BC and the 2nd Century BC dating. The ancient port connected nabatäische (see also Petra (City)) was located on the ancient trade route and served as the site for commercial goods of commercial city Maqnah compared to the present Dahab on the Saudi side.  In 2006 there were approximately 5000 Beduinenn and about 700 foreigners. The place is divided into the following areas: Azzalah, Masbat, Mashraba (arab. shrab = drink, source) and Dahab City. Previously, fishing was the main source of income for the population, which is now almost entirely in favor of tourism 'was abandoned.
